It's a common misconception that the terms aftershave, eau de toilette, and cologne are interchangeable, so let's clarify them first.
Everything revolves around power. An aftershave with 1 to 3 percent aroma oil is the weakest product. It will often contain calming and cooling ingredients, such as Aloe Vera, to help soothe your skin after shaving. It should only last two to three hours after application.
The average eau de toilette (EDT) comprises 4 to 8% scented oil. This oil is too strong to use on the face; instead, apply it to the "pulse spots" (neck, wrist, or chest). It should last for six to eight hours after application.
Cologne is a cross between aftershave and EDT that contains between 2 and 5% oil.
Finally, if you're looking for something particularly intense, a parfum or perfume comprises between 15 and 30 percent oil. This means that a modest amount placed to the pulse locations will last for an extremely long time. It is both expensive and scarce.
