15 JEWELLERY STYLE TIPS YOU NEED TO KNOW
How do you select and style jewelry to complement your appearance and wardrobe? And how do you make the most of your jewelry collection without becoming monotonous? The solutions aren't always evident. Never fear: we've compiled a list of our top 15 jewelry style ideas to help you look your best.
Does this sound familiar:
You have an overflowing jewelry collection full of pieces you love (or have forgotten you love), but you're not making the most of it and don't know where to begin. Or maybe you're just unsure about which things to buy that will complement each other and work for you.
Everyone has been there.
The good news is that we've compiled a list of useful jewelry style and fashion tips and tactics to assist you in wearing fine, fashion, and costume jewelry that complements your sense of style, personality, and clothing.
1. CREATE LAYERS WITH RINGS, NECKLACES OR BANGLES
Why not start with something enjoyable? Experiment with contrasting lengths, forms, textures, and colors to create eye-catching layers with rings, necklaces, bangles, and even earrings in some circumstances.
When layering necklaces, choose varied lengths to pull the eye up to your face. Different forms, colors, and textures will frequently work well. You should read our necklace length and style advice to aid you with this.
When it comes to bangles and bracelets, you can pretty much make an arm party out of various pieces that will flash and jangle as you move. Rings can be mixed, matched, and stacked in a variety of intriguing ways: for inspiration, see our stacking rings and cocktail rings.
If you have more than one pair of ear piercings or want to mix ear cuffs with other earrings, you can experiment with wearing different earring styles. Consider our dangle and drop earrings, as well as our stud earrings.
Layering and stacking is simple: simply acquire a variety of necklaces and pendants of all lengths, textures, and styles and try them on in various combinations to see what works. Make a note of the combinations you enjoy so you can recall them later.
Repeat with several types of jewelry to improve your stacking game.
2. KNOW WHEN TO STOP
You know how it is when too much becomes, well, too much.
If you're bringing attention to your face and neckline with layered necklaces or a statement necklace, perhaps an armful of bangles isn't necessary.
If you're wearing a strong pair of statement earrings, your necklace could be more understated or even absent entirely (on the other hand, a bold pair of earrings with a matching necklace can sometimes work beautifully).
If you've accessorized with many pieces, consider following Coco Chanel's advice: "Before leaving the house, glance in the mirror and remove one accessory." 1.
Or not, depending on the situation: wear what works for you and the occasion.
3. CONSIDER YOUR EARRINGS
Don't you think it's all too simple to lose track of your earrings?
However, your earrings are usually visible to anyone who is chatting to you, therefore they are very significant. Choose earrings that frame your face and complement your hair, eye color, and skin tone.
If you have long hair, a wonderful advice is to choose a color or metal finish that will be more evident based on your hair color.
4. DON'T FORGET TO CHANGE YOUR EARRINGS
I'm guilty of this myself: it's very simple to wear the same pair of stud earrings for weeks on end if you have pierced ears. Or perhaps you rarely update them.
However, changing your earrings on a daily basis is a terrific way to add interest and variety to your ensemble. It's also an excellent opportunity to clean your favorite pair of earrings!
You may easily modify your look by wearing a variety of little stud earrings on a daily basis. Depending on your attire, you can also add some shine and movement with dangling earrings.
Start by going through your jewelry collection to see what you haven't worn in a while. You can also buy new pairs of earrings that capture your eye and offer diversity and interest to your jewelry collection.
5. EXPERIMENT WITH MIXING METALS
Mixing different metal colors was once considered a fashion sin, which I never understood because I adore them all.
But, thankfully, even according to the fashion police, that is no longer the case: there is no need to cling to all silver jewelry, all gold jewelry, or all rose gold jewelry2.
Consider necklaces with pendants that contrast with the color of the chain, rings that blend multiple metal colors, or layered necklaces or bangles in different metals to give lively intrigue and color to your ensemble.
In recent years, mixing metals has been one of my favorite things to do when designing jewelry, so you'll discover a variety of items with mixed metal colors in our online jewellery shop, such as silver pendants with gold settings.
6. ACCESSORISE TO COMPLEMENT YOUR CLOTHING
Doesn't this seem straightforward enough? But I am well aware that this does not always occur.
Before you begin dressing, choose which thing you want to wear to your destination.
If you decide you truly want to wear a specific piece of jewelry on an outing, you should choose your dress and other accessories accordingly. Alternatively, you might choose the dress first and then match the jewelry and accessories to it.
Either way is OK. If you spent some time perfecting the mix, you should look stylish and well-dressed. Jewellery stores that sell mixed metal jewelry, such as silver pendants with gold settings.
7. DECIDE THE FOCUS OF YOUR OVERALL OUTFIT
ANOTHER DECISION TO MAKE WHILE GETTING READY IS WHAT YOU WANT THE FOCAL POINT OF YOUR OUTFIT TO BE.
With the correct jewelry and accessories, a simple – even dull – clothing can almost always be transformed into something unique. You can choose statement jewelry to bring a plain outfit to life, or you can mix and match your jewelry for a more layered style.
However, if you're wearing bold apparel, it's generally a smart idea to emphasize with smaller, more discreet jewelry items.
The greatest suggestion is to decide what works best for you and stick with it. Your goal should always be to dress like yourself so that you feel at ease and confident.
8. CHOOSE THE FOCAL POINT FOR YOUR JEWELLERY
If you're dressing up for something spectacular, where do you want people to look?
If you're wearing jewelry that's meant to capture the eye, it's usually better to center the visual attention on one body part, such as the neck, ears, or hands.
For example, if you're wearing a statement necklace, opt for more subdued rings and earrings. You might also consider leaving them out entirely.
Determine the focal focus and ensure that additional accessories and apparel do not distract from it.
9. EXTEND YOUR WARDROBE BY EXPERIMENTING
This might be a nice activity to do whenever you have some free time.
Simply put on a basic clothing and experiment with various pieces of jewelry and other accessories from your collection in front of a mirror. Experiment with unusual combinations of jewelry designs that you might not ordinarily think putting together, as well as diverse accessories such as scarves, bags, or watches.
Start with a single focal point, such as a statement piece, and then experiment with mixing, matching, stacking, and layering. Continue to experiment with different combinations and focal points.
You'll be surprised at how much you can change up the look of even the most basic outfit. And when you're done wearing one outfit, put on another and start over.
If you don't have a lot of jewelry or your collection isn't extremely diversified, think about what types of jewelry pieces will bring interest and depth to your wardrobe and go shopping.
Isn't it wonderful to have an excuse to get oneself some sparkly things? You're really welcome.
10. DON’T BE A SLAVE TO TRENDS
We've all known someone who is a bit too obsessed with fashion. To some extent, trends impact what we wear, which is OK. However, following fashion slavishly at the expense of your own taste and personality is never a wise idea. You'll eventually lose yourself. Oh, and it's also quite pricey!
Instead, attempt to discover and develop your own personal style that complements you and makes you feel confident. That may become unfashionable at some point in the future, but if you own it, I'm sure you'll be alright.
When selecting jewelry to wear, consider what complements your skin tone, frame, and overall sense of style. Consider all of these factors when accessorizing.
And don't forget about your personality: we're all unique, and your individuality should be allowed to shine through in the jewelry you wear and how you express yourself in general.
11. WEAR RINGS WITH PANACHE
Wearing rings on your fingers (and allegedly bells on your toes) means you'll have music wherever you go, according to an old nursery song. It's a true story.
Stacking rings, in particular, may bring a lot of diversity to your outfit because they can be mixed and matched to create a slightly different appearance each day. On other days, you can even wear just one or two simple stacking rings for a more minimalist style. Check out our simple guide to creating the ideal ring stack.
Consider wearing a set of matching rings or a variety of colors, textures, and jewels.
If you're going to wear many rings, the general rule seems to be to wear no more than one cocktail ring on each hand. Wearing an odd number of rings on one hand and an even number on the other is also effective.
But why not deviate from the regulations as you see fit? After all, that's why they're there!
12. MATCH YOUR NECKLACE TO YOUR NECKLINE
Unless it's a meaningful piece that you'd rather hide under clothing, your necklace or pendant should be visible and complement your attire.
For example, if you have a low V-necked gown, a pendant sitting in the V above your cleavage will look fantastic. A lengthy necklace will look wonderful with a higher neckline or a crew neck. A circular necklace complements scoop and other rounded necklines.
In our necklace lengths and style guide, you can learn more about matching necklaces with necklines.
13. YOU DON'T ALWAYS NEED TO WEAR A NECKLACE
It's not always a bad idea to go without a necklace (gasp!).
If you're wearing a statement pair of earrings, skipping the necklace can be a fantastic way to go, depending on your outfit. Also, if you're wearing a particularly low cut or high necked outfit, going without a necklace can look great.
14. CONSIDER YOUR SENTIMENTAL JEWELLERY
Do you have any sentimental jewelry that you always wear? I'm sure many of us do, including myself. But how do they work with a well-accessorized ensemble?
Just because something is sentimental doesn't mean it has to be worn every day (wedding and engagement rings aside, generally). Consider how you'd feel if you didn't have to wear a certain piece every day, and whether or not that's an option for you.
If you choose to wear one or more sentimental pieces of jewelry all or most of the time, think about how you can layer those pieces with other jewelry to give interest and variation to your look.
If it's a necklace, consider obtaining a longer chain or an adjustable chain so that it may be worn beneath clothing if it doesn't match the rest of your outfit. Rings can also be worn on a chain and concealed beneath clothing if necessary.
15. THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE: IGNORE THE RULES!
This is my favorite fashion tip of all time: violate the rules as you see appropriate.
I prefer people to appear like themselves rather than like everyone else. Dressing up should be enjoyable and unique to you. Your style reflects who you are and how you want to be perceived by others. It doesn't have to be all twin sets and pearls, or even all free flowing and boho.
If doing anything you want, breaking all fashion rules, and creating a chaotic clash of items you love to wear works for you, then my suggestion is to go for it.
16. BONUS TIP: CLEAN YOUR JEWELLERY
I'm on a quest to revolutionize the way people think about cleaning their jewelry. It will significantly improve the appearance of your jewelry and your overall appearance.
If you look closely at the jewelry you wear frequently or that has been sitting unworn for a while, you'll find that it's dirty, dull, and far from shining.
You wouldn't skip cleaning your clothes, so why should you skip cleaning your jewelry, which is just as 'up close and personal'?
